In the present 24 studies, Satzenhofer consistently treats all keys once each in major and minor and strictly observes the order of the circle of fifths. They are remarkable in their compositional-musical quality and their technical demands are aimed at advanced bassoonists. Unfortunately, his studies are less famous among bassoonists than the concert studies of Ludwig Milde and the etudes of Julius Weißenborn.

The source for the present edition was the "Praktische Fagottschule"
(Practical Bassoon Tutor) published by Wilhelm Zimmermann, which was compiled by Satzenhofer's widow and in which "Uebungen in allen Tonarten" (Exercises in all keys) can be found under the name of Julius Satzenhofer. It also contains two collections of bassoon duets, of which at least the first is not by Satzenhofer but by Küffner.
