In addition to a wide range of piano literature, his compositional worklist includes the oratorio; Der ewige Strom"; (The Eternal Stream) and a currently unpublished three-movement work for bassoon and string quartet. From 1925 until the outbreak of the war, Maler taught music theory at the Musikhochschule in Cologne and at the University of Bonn. After the war Maler was significantly involved in the foundation of the Nordwestdeutschen Musikakademie (today's Musikhochschule)Detmold, where he taught as a professor for composition and also chaired its rector. Since 1959 Maler lived in Hamburg, where he was director of the Musikhochschule Hamburg until 1969 and where he died in 1975.
